Customer Support: Troubleshooting: What should I do if my software crashes or closes unexpectedly?

This may have occurred because your software has become corrupt. Usually, you will see a message that reads “Abnormal Program Termination” or “This program has preformed an illegal operation and will be shut down.” If you run across either of these error messages, please follow the instructions below.

Please note that these instructions will include steps on how to preserve your Stamps.com Address Book and printing/purchase logs. Before continuing, please take note of your User Name, Password and Secret Code, as they will be needed to re-register your Stamps.com account.

First, make a backup copy of your Stamps.com Address Book and/or Printed Postage History:

  1. Create a new folder on your Desktop and name it Stamps.com Temp.
  2. Go to Start >> Search >> All files and folders (or Start >> Find >> Files or Folders for older versions of Windows). Search for sdceab3.dbf.
  3. Copy sdceab3.dbf into the Stamps.com Temp folder on your Desktop. Then perform a new search.
  4. Search for print*.dbf and copy all of the files you find to the Stamps.com Temp folder on your Desktop.
  5. Burn the Stamps.com Temp folder to a CD-ROM, so we can load it into your new computer.
(NOTE: The procedures above may be followed as well if you decide to save the information to a floppy, flash drive or other medium.)

Second, uninstall your Stamps.com software by going to the Windows Control Panel and into Add/Remove Programs:

  1. Go to Start >> Control Panel (or on some computers, Start >> Settings >> Control Panel), and choose Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Find Stamps.com in the list and click Remove.
  3. When asked if you wish to do an Automatic, Custom or Repair, choose Custom.
  4. For each step after that, choose Select All, then Next – Repeat until you get to Finish.
  5. If it asks you to delete any shared files, choose No to all.
  6. Reboot your computer if asked.

After this step is complete, click the link below, and run the key.exe program to clear out your old Stamps.com settings from the Windows Registry. This step is very important.

Third, download and reinstall the Stamps.com software from our website:

http://www.stamps.com/download/us/exe/stamps/stamps.exe

After you finish downloading the file, there should be an icon on your desktop (or wherever you chose to save it) named stamps.exe. Simply double-click that icon to begin the installation process. If you cannot find where you saved the file, you can do a search on your computer for "stamps.exe." When you find the file, simply double-click it to begin installation. When it asks if you have an account choose Yes, and follow the on-screen prompts.

At this point, please log in to your Stamps.com account. We recommend this step simply to test the program and make sure you can log in successfully. We recommend that you follow this step prior to the next step, because your old address book and logs may be part of the problem.

Finally, restore the backup copy of your address book and printing logs to your new computer:

  1. Move or copy sdceab3.dbf (located in the Stamps.com Temp folder on your CD) to: C:\Program Files\Stamps.com Internet Postage\eab. Answer Yes to overwrite the existing folder and files.
  2. Move or copy the print*.dbf file (located in the Stamps.com Temp folder on your CD) to: C:\Program Files\Stamps.com Internet Postage. Answer Yes to overwrite the existing file(s).
