Mail your tax returns with Stamps.com

As the deadline for filing your 2002 tax returns quickly approaches, keep in mind these important mailing tips:

  • Ensure sufficient postage. Enter the weight to determine exact postage needed. You can mail your tax returns via First-Class Mail®, Priority Mail® or Express Mail®.

  • Include your return address. Make sure your return address is clearly printed on the envelope.

  • Mail your tax returns by April 15th. The IRS considers your tax returns to be filed on time as long as it is postmarked by April 15.

Please note that mail dates printed by Stamps.com do not technically qualify as postmarks. Stamps.com recommends that you add Certified Mail™ or Return Receipt service if you want proof of mailing.

  • Purchase proof of mailing. To add Certified Mail or Return Receipt, click the Special Services button on the Print Postage screen. Complete the appropriate forms and affix securely to your mail piece.

    - Certified Mail provides you with a receipt of mailing as well as the ability to check the delivery status online.

    - Return Receipt (must be used with Certified Mail) returns to you a postcard signed by the person who receives your mail.

    - You can obtain free Certified Mail and Return Receipt forms at your local Post Office™.

  • If you are mailing to a P.O. address, you can only use USPS® postage. Other services such as FedEx, UPS and Airborne Express do NOT deliver to P.O. addresses.

Shipping Labels and First-Class Mail® Restrictions

The U.S. Postal Service® has strict guidelines on shipping envelopes with First-Class Mail rates. In order to combine e/Delivery or Signature Confirmation™ services with First-Class Mail® rates, all envelope parcels must measure at least
¾-inch thick
and weigh no more than 13 ounces.

Flat envelopes - large or small - cannot be used with First-Class Mail Shipping Labels unless they meet both the USPS thickness and weight requirements. If you are unsure, use a box at least ¼-inch thick. Check www.usps.com for more information.

New Requirement for Mailing to Military Addresses

Effective immediately, all mailings to APO/FPO addresses must include a return address and the full name of the addressee.

The Department of Defense will not accept any mail that is addressed generically, e.g., to "Any Service Member", "Any Soldier", "Sailor", "Airman", "Marine", etc.
